CLO3D for Custom Fit:

A 12 Week Beginner-Friendly Course

Go from complete beginner to confident 3D designer—and transform how you create garments forever.

What if you could perfect fit before cutting fabric, design for your own exact body measurements, and unlock new creative and professional opportunities?

That's exactly what you'll learn in this comprehensive 12-week CLO3D course taught by patternmaker and fashion professor Ruby Gertz.

What Makes This Course Different

Most CLO3D courses walk you through rote exercises on default avatars and teach you to make pretty renders.

This course is different.

You'll learn CLO3D through a size-inclusive, custom-fit lens that emphasizes practical, real-world applications:

Design for YOUR body – In the first few weeks, you'll receive a complimentary custom body scan that's ready to use in CLO3D (a $200+ value)

Practical workflows – Learn to digitize existing paper patterns, import patterns from Adobe Illustrator, and export print-ready patterns you can actually sew

Creative, non-standard patternmaking – We'll explore fit for all bodies, not just industry-standard sizing

Beyond rendering – Yes, you'll learn to make beautiful images, but more importantly, you'll learn to use CLO as a practical design and production tool

This isn't about following along with someone else's projects. This is about building skills you can apply to YOUR work immediately.

I’ve deepened my understanding in pattern making in the last 4 weeks more than I have in the last 2 years when I started! Using the tools in CLO for dart rotations and manipulations, gathering, slash and spreading, pleats etc. and getting to see it applied in real time has improved my understanding ten fold. Being able to see the patterns 2D and 3D simultaneously while making adjustments has made me so much more confident in the how & why of pattern making.

I knew CLO3D could do a bunch of amazing things that I wanted, but it has been such a big learning curve. This course not only is teaching me the specific things I really am excited to use CLO3D for (and I don't have to scour the internet for tutorials), but the fact that it has a real-time component is motivating me to push through and do the hard work. This class feels tailored to me. I am gaining skills I've wanted to have for awhile but seemed too hard to acquire. This format (the clarity of the videos, the synchronous weekly meetings, and the discord for every question that pops up) works so well.

Why CLO3D?

I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that CLO3D has completely transformed my creative workflow.

After integrating this program into my freelance patternmaking and design work over the past two years—and completing intensive training at CLO3D's NYC headquarters—I can confidently say this is the future of fashion design.

I now exclusively design and draft patterns for client work in CLO3D, and here's why:

Here's what CLO3D lets you do:

1. Perfect fit on ANY body.

Use body scans or custom avatars to design garments on someone's exact shape and proportions. No more guessing. No more "I hope this fits." You SEE the fit in realistic 3D before you ever pick up scissors. This is game-changing if you struggle to find patterns that fit your body, do custom work for clients with diverse body types, want to design adaptive or inclusive fashion, or are tired of making muslin after muslin.

2. Save time, money, and materials.

I used to spend hundreds of dollars and days of time making physical samples that would ultimately end up in my scrap bin. Now I perfect everything digitally first. I only cut fabric when I know it's going to work. My fabric waste has dropped dramatically. My turnaround time is faster. My stress level? Way lower.

3. Create portfolio work that gets you NOTICED.

When I pitch to clients or apply for opportunities, I'm not showing flat sketches or photos of samples on a dress form. I'm presenting photorealistic 3D garments that look like they came from a major brand's lookbook. It completely changed how people perceive my work—and my rates.

4. Open doors to remote freelance opportunities.

Fashion brands—from indie labels to major corporations—are actively seeking CLO3D skills for both full-time positions and freelance projects. These are in-demand capabilities that open doors to flexible, remote work opportunities you can do from anywhere.

Even if you're not looking for traditional employment, adding CLO3D to your skillset makes you more valuable as a freelancer, consultant, or collaborator. One client project using these skills could easily pay for the entire course.

A note on value:

The regular price of $1495 is roughly equivalent to one college credit at the private university where I teach. As someone who teaches fashion at the college level, I can tell you that this course is comparable in depth and rigor to a 2 or 3-credit college course—but with way more personalized support, live office hours, and a community you'd never get in a university lecture hall.

For folks ready to commit early, I'm offering an EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT, bringing the price down to $1350. You're essentially getting college-level instruction at a fraction of the cost, plus:

• A $200+ custom body scan included

• The ability to learn on your own schedule

• Lifetime access to course materials

• Direct access to your instructor (that's me!)

Pay in one chunk or over 3 monthly installments. You can also use BNPL programs (Affirm, Afterpay) to space payments out over up to 6 months if you choose.
My teaching style is hands-on, collaborative, and focused on real-world applications. I know what it's like to learn complex software, to feel overwhelmed by the learning curve, and to finally have that "aha!" moment when everything clicks. I'll be with you every step of the way.

Ruby! You are such an amazing teacher. I appreciate the attention to detail, how well thought out the course material is, even down to the order that we learn things. Everything feels so approachable, and I feel so confident in my understanding of how things work in the program.

FAQs

When does the course start?

The course officially kicks off with a live welcome call on Sunday, June 7, 2026. During this call, we'll get to know each other, I'll walk you through the course structure, and we'll open up the Discord community.

You'll also get immediate access to Module 0, which covers software and hardware requirements, getting CLO3D set up, and everything you need to prepare for the course.

Module 1 releases Friday, June 12, giving you the weekend to dive in before our first live office hours on Tuesday, June 16. From there, new modules are released weekly, with office hours every Tuesday at 7pm EST.

Do I need design or patternmaking experience to take this course?

No! This course starts from the ground up. If you've never used CLO3D before, you're in the right place. That said, I do recommend having some basic sewing experience and having sewn from a pattern at least once or twice before taking this course.

Is this a live course or self-paced?
It's a hybrid! Video modules are pre-recorded so you can watch on your own schedule, but we have weekly live office hours for real-time support and community connection (these will also be recorded for those who can’t attend live). Modules are released weekly to keep the group moving together.

What is your refund policy?

All sales are final.

Because this is a live cohort-based course with limited enrollment, personalized support, and custom resources prepared for each participant (including your body scan file), I'm unable to offer refunds once registration is complete.

How do I know if this course is right for me?

I want you to feel confident in your decision to join, which is why I encourage you to:

• Watch this free YouTube tutorial to see my teaching style and get a peek at how I use CLO3D

• Email me with any questions before registering

• Review the full curriculum and course details carefully

This course is a significant investment, and I want to help you be sure it's the right fit for you before you commit. Once you're in, I'll support your learning journey every step of the way.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes! You can pay in full or split the payments into 3 monthly installments. You can also use BNPL programs (Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna) to space payments out over up to 6 months. Choose the plan that works best for you when registering.

When will the live office hours take place?

Live office hours will be held at the same time every week: Tuesdays at 7pm EST. I've chosen this consistent schedule so you can plan ahead and block the time on your calendar for all 12 weeks.

If this time doesn't work for your schedule or time zone, don't worry—all sessions will be recorded and available within 24 hours. Many students find the recordings just as valuable since you can watch at your own pace and skip to the parts most relevant to you.

What equipment do I need?

You'll need a computer that meets CLO3D's system requirements and a CLO3D license. CLO offers a 2-week free trial, followed by a $50/month subscription fee. The CLO3D software is not provided with this class, you’ll need to purchase it on your own.

Hardware/desk setup: you'll want a 3-button mouse with a scroll wheel, and, while not required, a second monitor may be helpful so that you can follow along with the tutorials on a separate screen instead of switching back and forth between windows.

How much time should I set aside for this course?

Plan to set aside ~3-4 hours per week to watch the pre-recorded content and complete the practice exercises. You can always choose to forego some of the practice exercises and revisit them later.

What if I fall behind?

Life happens! You'll continue to have access to all course materials after the 12 weeks, so you can catch up at your own pace. The weekly office hours are only live during the 12-week period, but recordings will be available.

How does the body scan work?

All students will receive an email link to complete a body scan via smartphone before the first module releases on June 12. I will then be distributing the scans back to students as I receive them.

You can learn more about the body scan process on the TruetoForm website.
